We want to share information regarding our relationships with orthopedic device and pharmaceutical companies. Each of our doctors is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) or the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. Both organizations hold members to extremely high ethical standards to ensure that even the appearance of a conflict of interest does not jeopardize the trust that patients place in our doctors. Our center adheres to the AAOS Standards of Professionalism that require doctors to identify and disclose potential conflicts of interest to their patients, the public and colleagues. We receive financial support from companies for our annual educational course, the Baltimore Limb Deformity Course. Companies also provide financial support for our annual fundraiser, the Save-A-Limb Ride, Walk and Festival. The proceeds from this event benefit the programs and patients of the International Center for Limb Lengthening and the Center for Joint Preservation and Replacement at Sinai Hospital. The proceeds also help our international outreach missions to the developing world.
Our physicians have been active in their careers with the research and development of new devices, surgical instruments and techniques. We use research funding from companies to conduct studies that help us improve patient care. Some of our physicians work under contract with orthopaedic companies, providing consulting services on new products and input on research and development. In return for this time and expertise, some of our physicians receive compensation in the form of a consulting fee, stock options or royalties.
We use products from these companies in the care of patients, but we also use similar products from other manufacturers. We want to assure you that the selection of which product to use in your care – and the care of all of our patients – is based only on what is best for the patient, not on which company makes the product. It is important that you are aware of these relationships with device manufacturers, understand that we put the interests of patients first, and know that we are available to answer any questions that you may have.
